For the last year it may have seemed as though time has stood still. This feeling will have been exacerbated by looking at the clock on our village church. Last year it started to run erratically and, despite the attentions of several local experts, eventually came to a standstill in the summer.
The clock was manufactured in Derby in 1920 and was installed as the village's memorial to those of the Parish of Lingen who gave their lives in the Great War. It is therefore an important part of village life and its history.
Robert Nisbet, our churchwarden, contacted one of the very few church clock specialists in the country. They have produced their report and a quote to repair the clock. It comes to just over £5,000 including VAT. There is already a dedicated clock fund deriving from the original public subscription which paid for its installation after WW1 and has paid for occasional repairs and servicing since. It contains just over £2,000. We have to raise the balance of £3,000.
We feel that the village might like to contribute to preserving this important memorial. Any donation, large or small, would be very gratefully received. We need to start work soon to prevent the mechanism from seizing up so, in order to get the job done as quickly as possible, St. Michaels is willing to underwrite the cost pending receiving donations from the community. In the unlikely event that we raise more than £3,000 the excess will be kept in the Clock Fund and used for a £225 annual service to try and prevent this happening again.
